Memory Books: Preserving Your Children’s School Memories

The following is a guest post from Becky, Purposeful Homemaking

Memory Books were something I made back when I was teaching in a classroom, and it’s something I keep thinking I need to do for our own children now that we’re homeschooling.

I probably won’t be able to assemble one until this summer, but I thought I’d at least present the idea to you now in case you wanted to get started on one, yourself! I think School Memory Books are something you can do whether you homeschool or not, because it’s a nice way to save the extra special projects your child does during the school year.

When I taught in the classroom, I did one book per year. However, I think what I might with our children as they are homeschooled is continue to add to one large book with possibly a divider between the school years.

How to Make a School Memory Book

School Memory Books are easy to make! As you can see from the first picture, I make a cover page for my large 3 ring binder. I then use sheet protectors throughout the book because it keeps everything nice and neat, and you can utilize both sides of the sheet protector. Plus, they’re great for containing things that might have little pieces to it or that need to be folded up due to size like this story below.

When I was a teacher, I typed up a little synopsis of what we learned in particular units. But, if you’re doing this as a parent using what your child has brought home from school, then you can just pick your favorite things to add.

I would also include some of my favorite stories that my students would tell, and I would also type up what some of our favorite days were from the year (e.g. Camping Day, Cowboy Day, etc.)

I loved including pictures of my students enjoying Theme Days as well. It has been nice to show this Memory Book to former students. They love seeing the pictures of when they were little.

I plan to put this on my Summer To-Do List because I know our own children will love looking back on their Memory Book some day.

What are some inexpensive things you do to preserve memories?

Finding Fulfillment in Everyday Tasks: The Most Important Little Things

Mom and Baby

Sometimes, I get very discouraged with how my days are spent.  I spend the majority of my time each day changing diapers, cleaning up spills and messes, playing peek-a-boo, cooking, and cleaning.  I’m sure you know the drill.

All of these “non-important” jobs often seem tedious and almost meaningless to me.  Mundane tasks have a way of wearing on me, and to be honest there are days that I have a hard time getting through my everyday chores.

I would rather be out changing the world, than wiping little handprints off the coffee table.

I want to make a difference in this world.  I want to help others.  I want God to use my life!

I desire these things so strongly, that I am sometimes left feeling unfulfilled by my current role as wife/mother/homemaker.  Do you ever feel this way?

The Truth About “The Little Things”

This type of thinking that I am prone to – that what I do as a stay-at-home mom doesn’t matter – is quite dangerous and couldn’t actually be farther from the truth!

The truth is that I am making a difference in this world.  I am helping others.  And God is using my life!

I must realize that when I spend my days doing the dishes, cooking for my family, and cuddling with my son, that I really am doing the important things.  These little things do matter.  These little things are for God’s glory, and they actually matter a lot.  Especially to the little life that God has trusted to my hands.

The following is one of my favorite quotes.  It brings tears to my eyes and really helps me to put things into perspective and have a better attitude.

"To the whole world you’re only someone,
but to someone you’re the whole world."

Wow.  I need to be reminded of this daily.  My child’s world is much smaller than my world.  The impact that my life has on his is real.  To have such a great influence over another life is exciting, humbling and overwhelming all at once.

The little things that I do everyday are huge to this young child.  I am his only mother.  I can choose to resent that role or I can choose to embrace it.  The choice is up to me.

I want to share this song by Steven Curtis Chapman that has been so encouraging to me when I feel like what I do doesn’t matter.

I continually pray that God will keep my perspective right in this matter.  I certainly need His grace as I spend my days doing the little things that really, truly do amount up to big things!

Glass Jar Picture Frames

GlassBottlePictureFrames

This is such a quick, simple, and inexpensive (read free!) project that really looks quite stunning once it’s all put together.  I love decorating my home with simple and unique items, but I hate spending money on cheaply made, mass produced decorations.  So when I saw this idea for glass jar picture frames, I knew that I had to do it!  It’s simple, it’s unique, and I didn’t have to spend one penny for this project!

To Make Your Glass Jar Picture Frames

Supplies:

  1. Pictures
  2. Glass jars (saved from peanut butter, applesause, salsa, etc. An assortment of different styles and sizes looks better than using all the same)
  3. Ribbon (optional)

Assembly:

I soaked my jars in a sink full of hot, soapy water overnight to remove the labels.  The next morning they came right off.  Any residue that was left from the glue was easily removed with some warm water and a scratchy pad.

GlassJarPictureFrames

Once the jars are clean make sure they are completely dry, simply fill them with assorted printed pictures.  You may have to trim some of your pictures to get them to fit in the jar properly.  I only ended up having to trim one of mine, and only because it was a 5×7 to start with.

Decorate your jars with ribbon if desired.  I had some autumn-like ribbon (leftover from another project) that I tied around the tops or bottoms of my jars.  Since I was using this colorful ribbon, I decided to do all black and white photos to let the ribbon colors stand out.

GlassJarFrames

These are so versatile, and the pictures can be switched out so easily that you can change them as often as you like! I love how mine turned out, and I can’t wait to add more to the collection!

These make great, inexpensive handmade gifts!  They can be so personalized and the recipient will LOVE that you made them yourself!

Why I Don’t Wear My Shoes in the House

I’ve always known people that took their shoes off at the door upon arriving at home.  To be honest, I always thought that those people were a little weird and maybe a bit obsessive compulsive!  Well, now here I am, with a house of my own to take care of, and guess what.  We take our shoes off at the door upon arriving at home!  Are we weird?  Do we have obsessive compulsive tendencies?  I don’t think so!  We just like to be comfortable and keep our floors clean!  Let me share with you  four reasons why I don’t wear my shoes in the house.

1.  It keeps invisible germs, pesticides, and chemicals off of your floors.

Think about what lives on the ground where you walk when you’re out and about. Ever been to a public restroom?  Do you want those germs on that floor tracked into your house?  I know I don’t.  Even when your just walking at a park or somewhere else outside, there is chemical and pesticide residue everywhere that stays on your shoes.  If you leave your shoes on when you get home these chemicals will be tracked all over your house.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I am NOT afraid of dirt or getting dirty.  I love to go outside barefoot and feel the dirt between my toes!  There’s tons of good stuff in the dirt, but I don’t want to bring the bad stuff (chemicals) into my house!  And trust me, even though you can’t see the nasty germs from the bathroom and the yucky residue from the chemicals, they are there.

2.  It keeps grass and dirt from being tracked in the house.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t particularly like to clean any more than is necessary!  Once we started taking our shoes off at the door, there was a noticeable difference in the amount of time I had to spend sweeping and mopping our floors.  This is true in the summer and winter seasons.  In the summer, it’s grass and dirt.  In the winter, it’s mud and slush.  But whatever it is that’s being tracked in by dirty shoes, taking them off at the door will keep your floors clean and shiny a lot longer!

3.  It’s better for your feet and for your balance.

When you are barefoot, you are less likely to trip and fall.  Your feet provide your brain with feedbackLaurel of Leaves wrote a great article about going barefoot here.  I would like to pull a quote of hers that I really liked. “When you think about it, it actually makes sense to go barefoot. Those funny looking appendages at the end of our legs are shaped like that for a reason. We have toes to aid in our balance and our sensory perception of the ground beneath our feet.”  The whole blog post is really worth reading, and I would encourage you to check it outShe has some great pictures comparing the feet of people who live barefoot and those who live in shoes. Very interesting!

4.  It’s just more comfortable!

To be completely honest, I used to think that I was more comfortable in shoes than I was barefoot.  But since I have made a conscious effort to NOT wear shoes at home, I have learned that I am actually more comfortable when I don’t have any shoes on.  I mean a lot more comfortable!  It really just feels so free and so natural to walk around with nothing on my feet.  This may sound weird, but the muscles in my feet actually got sore the first week that I started going barefoot!  My feet are now stronger, and I can tell that my foot muscles are more developed now than they were when I wore shoes all the time.  Huh!  Who knew you’re feet could get their own little workout just from walking around barefoot!

These are the reasons that our family no longer wears our shoes in the house.  What about you?  Do you wear your shoes in the house?  Have you always taken your shoes off at the door?  What about the comfort aspect?  Are you more comfortable with or without shoes on?  I’m so curious what everyone else’s opinion is on this!

Are You Plugged in to Christ?

Toaster

For some reason, I have a tendency of trying to make toast in the morning while the toaster is still unplugged. Silly, huh? If the toaster is not plugged in to it’s power source, it is obviously not going to work!  There really is just no way around it – the toaster has to be plugged in if it is going to fulfill it’s purpose in my kitchen – the purpose of making me some toast!

Now when my toaster is plugged in, it does an awesome job at toasting up a delicious piece of perfectly crisp, warm sourdough bread for breakfast. It really is a good toaster… when it’s connected to it’s power source! Without it’s power my toaster is not capable of a whole lot more than taking up counter space.  No matter how hard it tries, my toaster really can’t do a whole lot on it’s own.  But with it’s power it is capable of accomplishing what it was made to do!

The other day I realized a funny little thing – I am a lot like my toaster!

I have a very hard time functioning when I am not connected to my Power Source! When I am not plugged in to God and His Word, I am about as useless as my unplugged toaster. However, when I am plugged in to God and His Word, I am much more able to fulfill my purpose and accomplish what I was made to do!  Although I know this to be true, I still try to make it through the day on my own power sometimes.  Silly, huh? This usually works out just about as well as when I try to make toast with an unplugged toaster – it doesn’t! But, oh my, what a difference it makes in my day if I simply take the time to plug in to God – the ultimate source of power!

Sometimes in the rush of life it is easy to just plain forget and not even think about spending time with God.  We don’t have time – there are too many other important things to do, right!?!  But, oh, if we would only realize that just like the toaster, no matter how hard we try, we really can’t do a whole lot on our own!  Sure we can probably make it through the day, but are we really reaching our full potential and accomplishing what we were made to do?  How thankful I am to have THE Power Source available to me every hour of every day – with never a risk or chance of a power outage!

So before we start each day – before we try to make toast in a powerless toaster!let’s stop and take just a moment to get plugged in!!!

My Less Than Perfect House

Isn’t it amazing how God always has a way of encouraging us with just exactly the right words, at just exactly the right time?

Lately, I have felt like the everyday chores of life have just been coming at me faster than I have been able to tackle them. I just felt like I couldn’t get ahead.  I’m sure you know the feeling, right?  You just finish cleaning your kitchen, only to find dishes in the sink 5 minutes later; or you just folded the last load of laundry, only to find another load that needs to be washed.  I have been very discouraged in this area this past week, and I was really starting to let it get to me.

But last night, God gave me an attitude adjustment! I opened my Bible up last night, randomly, to Proverbs chapter 14.  I started reading (not really paying that much attention to the words passing my eyes) when verse 4 suddenly jumped out at me.

“Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.”

It was as if God was saying, “Where no family is, the house is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the family!”

Wow!  I suddenly felt so humbled and so thankful for my wonderful family and for my less than perfect house – what a rotten attitude I have been having lately!  I do like it when my house is perfectly clean – when the kitchen is spotless, every last piece of laundry is put away, the floors are sparkling, and everything is in it’s place.  And do you know what?  If I didn’t have a loving, amazing, sweet family, my house would probably always look pretty close to perfect.  But I can guarantee you that any day, anytime,  I would choose my family over a perfect house in a heartbeat!  Much increase is by the strength of my family!
